Monero(XMR) Core Team Member Suggests Possibility of Migration to GitLab

Monero developers, who leverage the Github platform, are a worried lot these days. Microsoft’s acquisition of Github has sent worrying signals to the developer community. They fear it might bring problems to privacy oriented cryptocurrencies like Monero.

Satya Nadella, the Microsoft CEO, wrote in a blog post, “And Microsoft is all-in on open source. We have been on a journey with open source, and today we are active in the open source ecosystem, we contribute to open source projects, and some of our most vibrant developer tools and frameworks are open source. When it comes to our commitment to open source, judge us by the actions we have taken in the recent past, our actions today, and in the future.”

The developer community is unconvinced by Satya Nadella’s word that GitHub will remain open-source. Gitlab, GitHub’s most significant competitor, has seen a soaring activity in the use of its platform. It seems Satya’s assurances have failed to cut ice with developers. After the acquisition of Monero was announced, conversations started on Reddit with the question: “Microsoft is going to buy Github. Do you think Monero should stay on Github or leave?” A member of the Monero XMR core team answered that migration to GitLab is possible if that’s what the coin’s developers want, writing: “If the dev group thinks it’s wise.” The developer continued that Monero already has a mirror code on GitLab, which would ensure a seamless transition. It remains to be seen if more members of Monero core team speak in unison about the transition to GitLab. Monero coin prices might witness a deviation if developers choose GitLab over GitHub.

Monero (XMR) as a cryptocurrency is uniquely designed to be anonymous. With Monero, users don’t need to bank on third-parties to ensure the safety of their funds. The Monero blockchain muddles all incoming and outgoing addresses and transaction. It tantamounts to extra security for its users. Monero’s extra layer of protection makes it appealing to cryptocurrency audiences and developers.
